What is RRID?
RRID (Research Resource Identifier) is a persistent, unique digital identifier used to standardize the citation of experimental materials and tools in scientific publications, including antibodies, cell lines, model organisms, plasmids, software, and other biological reagents. Functionally analogous to a DOI for literature, RRIDs are assigned to experimental resources with the primary objective of enhancing research reproducibility and transparency.
What does an RRID look like? How to interpret it?
Antibody: RRID:AB_2936086
Mouse Strain: RRID:IMSR_JAX:000664
Software Tool: RRID:SCR_003070
The format follows a unified structure: "RRID:" + category prefix + "_" + unique accession number.
When are RRIDs required?
High-impact journals (e.g., Nature, Cell, Journal of Neuroscience) mandate that authors provide RRIDs upon first mention of key resources in the Methods section during manuscript submission.
Grant applications, clinical trial registrations, and public data submissions may also require RRIDs to facilitate resource tracking and usage monitoring.
Proactive use of RRIDs significantly improves material traceability, enabling others to replicate experiments efficiently and allowing researchers to track their reagents through subsequent literature citations.
How to obtain an RRID?
For existing resources (using antibodies as an example):
(1) Navigate to https://scicrunch.org/resources and select the appropriate resource category;

Why can't I find the resource by catalog number?
This indicates the resource has not yet been registered in the database. You may register it yourself or contact the antibody supplier to assist with registration.
(1) Click the registration button below

Upon submission, a provisional RRID will be generated. The identifier will become publicly available following database curation and approval.
